Shubman Gill is one of the best batters with the endurance to play big innings and rack up hundreds in all formats of the game. He has a knack for scoring big runs consistently which made him a first-choice member in the Indian team. He is one of the cricketers with a solid batting performance in India’s current batting order.
The Punjab-born batter is renowned for his excellent technique, defense, and graceful batting approach. Gill has the potential to succeed Indian batting greats like Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, and Virat Kohli, among others, given the rapid pace at which he is progressing.
The top-order batter had been chosen as the vice-captain of the India Under-19 team for the 2018 World Cup due to his run-scoring flair and leadership qualities. Prior to that, the 24-year-old played for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy in 2017 and made his first-class debut there with a fifty and a blistering knock of 129 in the subsequent game.
Gill has made his international debut in an ODI series against New Zealand in Hamilton in January 2019. Meanwhile, he made his Test and T20I debut in 2020 and 2023, respectively.
On December 26, 2020, Gill made his Test debut for India against Australia, aiding India in a comeback victory in the second game of the series. He was instrumental for the side, amassing 91 runs in the fourth Test at the Gabba in Brisbane, which helped India clinch the series.
He achieved a significant milestone in his professional cricket career on August 22, 2022, in which he struck his maiden ODI century in an away series against Zimbabwe in Harare. Meanwhile, he earned his first-ever century in the longest format of the game against Bangladesh on December 16, 2022.
Gill, who made his T20I debut on 3 January, 2023, against Sri Lanka, failed to play a soil knock. However, he managed to score a double century against New Zealand on 18 January 2023. He ended up being the fifth Indian cricketer to make a double hundred in an ODI match, in addition to being the youngest batter in the history of men’s international cricket to do so.
Gill struck his first T20I century against New Zealand on February 1, 2023. He added another feather to his cap on the same day, becoming the fifth Indian batter to do it across all formats of the game. He now also holds the record for the highest individual score by an Indian batter in men’s T20I, smashing an unbeaten 126 off just 63 deliveries.
Gill has demonstrated his batting prowess in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well. In the 2023 edition, he scored three centuries for runners-up Gujarat Titans, finishing the season with 890 runs at an average of 59.33 and a strike rate of 157.80.
